Blackout in Protest of SOPA

Posted by Luke on 01/17/2012

On January 18, I will be taking lukedude5.com and imgdiode.com down for a "protest" of SOPA. This bill threatens both of these sites if passed, and I would like to do my part to help spread awareness.

Forum, Livestream and Server

Posted by Luke on 01/12/2012

This blog post will talk about the forum, my livestream, the the non-existent Minecraft server :(.

First of all, the Minecraft server is not still up. It was suspended a while ago with no information, no email, no nothing. I contacted the host and never got a reply. I don't have any more news as of this moment.

Secondly, I am going to start livestreaming more often. As I settle into the livestream climate, I may be doing lots of testing and short streams. Also, since I don't have the greatest upload speed (0.72 Mbps), the livestreams may not be the greatest quality. However, I will record everything I livestream and post it on YouTube after the stream. If you don't currently follow me on Twitch.tv and you want to watch the streams, make sure you follow me to be notified when I start streaming.

I created a text-message notification service to send a text to you when I start livestreaming. If you want to get a text about 5 minutes before I start a stream (or whenever I remember to send it out before the stream), head on over to http://www.lukedude5.com/livestream/ to sign up. You can opt out anytime.

Lastly, I have been hard at work on the forum on this website for the past few days. I have made a lot of progress, and am not mostly in the process of bug fixing. I don't yet have an ETA for when it will go live, but I may quietly open it up to people who follow me on Facebook and Twitter for BETA testing.

That's all that's on my mind right now. Leave a comment if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer it!

A Few Ideas

Posted by Luke on 11/18/2011

I have had a few ideas for features, but I'm not sure if they will be useful. It would take quite a bit of work to add them, so I would like to get some feedback before implementing them (or not implementing them).

The major idea I had is a notification system of sorts. For example, if someone posts a comment on your profile or replies to one of your comments, you would get a notification on this website (kind of like Facebook). I was also thinking about email notifications when you have new messages. Of course, if I did implement this, it could easily be disabled in the account manager section of your account.

Leave some feedback!

Update

Posted by Luke on 10/24/2011

I realize I haven't posted a post on my blog in a while, so I want to give a short update.

I have been working on a few things for this website over the last few weeks. The first thing is the "Remember Me" function. When you log in, you can check this, and next time you come back you will be remembered so you don't have to log in. Unfortunately, this isn't working. I have narrowed the problem down to a default PHP function not working (setcookie), and am working on a fix.

I have also been working on the forum. I have made substantial progress on it. I would say I'm about 1/3 done. It's a lot of work. The hardest part is actually making it look good.

Anyway, Battlefield 3 came out today, and I want to make some videos on it, and do a campaign play-through, so I won't be working on this site for a little bit. I will, however, come back to it soon!

I have just launched the beta of ImgDiode.

Anyway, tell me what you think!

Battlefield 3 - First Thoughts

Posted by Luke on 09/27/2011

I haven't played very much Battlefield 3 yet, for one reason mainly, but I would still like to post my first thoughts here.

Battlefield 3 is a fun game. It really is. However, whenever I play it, I lag some bad, it's unplayable. I don't mean computer lag. I have an awesome computer, which runs Battlefield 3 perfectly. What I'm talking about is server lag. When I get into a game, I run somewhere, and everything seems to be going fine. Then I teleport back to where I started. Now, I know this will probably be fixed soon, but how can EA have an excuse? They should know exactly how many people would start playing the closed beta today (September 27), and should have planned accordingly.

Another thing is, why can't I look at the options menu while dead? The only time I can change my options are while I'm alive.... That makes sense. I have to waste time standing in the middle of the battlefield trying to change my options, then get shot and have the menu close when I die. Rinse and repeat.

Anyway, I wanna go over some of the good things about Battlefield 3 now. First of all, the ability to go prone is awesome. It's a nice addition to the series, and will make for much better sniping.

The sway on the sniper scopes is also a nice addition, in my eyes. Sniping in Battlefield Bad Company 2 was fun, but very unrealistic with the perfectly steady scope (not the point, but still).

I haven't played enough to really do much else, but I can tell I'm going to love Battlefield 3 once the lag issue gets fixed.

The open beta will be available on September 29 (Thursday).

Send Messages!

Posted by Luke on 09/24/2011

I just finished up the private messaging system! Now you can send a message to any other user, as long as you know their username! Click here to send a message. It is still very primitive, but I will add more stuff eventually. For example, when you reply to a message, you cannot see the original message.

In other news, I will start rolling out user profiles very soon!

Fonts

Posted by Luke on 09/22/2011

Time to pick a font for this website. What I have been using is Verdana, and I quite like it. I'm torn between Verdana and Helvetica, though.... I just can't decide. Thoughts?

Features To Implement

Posted by Luke on 09/20/2011

This is the post where you can and should suggest new features that I should implement into this blog, or lukedude5.com. I will list some my ideas, and your ideas below:

1. "You should add a member part! Like info on that member, profile pic, stuff like that!" - loopy268
2. Edit blog posts (you don't see this, this would just be for quick and easy editing of, say, this post).
3. Reply to other people's comments.
4. BBCode!! Finished. You may now use basic BBCode. The three tags you may use are [b][/b], [i][/i], and [u][/u]. I will add more eventually.
5. Member pages (i.e. lukedude5.com/user/luke) - corresponds with number 1.
6. Private Messaging.
7. Reputation System?
8. Forum.
9. Make everything look pretty. Sort of working on this.
10. Prevent accidental double posting.
11. Emoticons.

That's all I can think of for now.

View Counter

Posted by Luke on 09/19/2011

You may have noticed a view counter in the upper right hand corner of the main blog page. This is another new feature I will be rolling out, and it will be on all blog posts. The counter is a unique hit counter, so even if you refresh the page 5,000,000 times, it will still only count it as 1 view.

Also, this post is a test to see if the view counter will work on this page automatically, without me having to fix anything.

Forgot Your Password?

Posted by Luke on 09/19/2011

Just finished up the finishing touches on the forgot your password page (you must be logged out to view it)! If you ever forget your password, just enter your username and email to be emailed instructions on how to reset it.

If you have any suggestions for new features for this blog / website, feel free to leave a comment!

Change Your Password

Posted by Luke on 09/18/2011

I just finished up the change your password page, and added a link to the members page, so if you would like to change your password, now you can! Hmm, now I guess I should add the ability to reset your password if you forget it... I'll start work on that tonight, and finish it either tonight or tomorrow!

Edit Your Comments!

Posted by Luke on 09/18/2011

You can now edit your comments, as well as delete them! You can only edit comments that you have posted in about the past day. If you can delete a comment, you should be able to edit it as well. All comments posted before this point are un-editable, but I won't go into that here. An edited comment will have the following text appear below it, to alert others that it has been edited.

Edited by your username on 9/18/2011 at 6:26PM.

Obviously, your username will be replaced with your username, and the corresponding date and time when you edited it will replace what is above (which is just an example). Please let me know if you find any bugs. Thanks, and enjoy!

Delete Your Comments!

Posted by Luke on 09/18/2011

You may have noticed two new options beneath your comments if you have been browsing through posts where you've commented (haha). Those two new options are Edit and Delete. These (obviously) add the ability to edit and delete your posts. Currently, I only have the delete functionality working, but getting edit to work shouldn't be too hard. When you delete your comment, it will not be deleted from the page. It will only change the text to say:

Comment deleted.

I have chosen to do this because, in the future, when I add replying to comments, or if a flame war is started (I hope not), someone can't simply delete their whole comment and make someone else look like an idiot.

If you find any bugs with the delete system, or see the option to delete someone else's comment (which you won't be able to do, even if you do see it), please inform me and I will fix it. Thanks!

You May Now Leave a Comment!

Posted by Luke on 09/16/2011

I just finished up the comment system! There may be a few bugs, which I will hopefully tackle tonight, and then there is the part where you can't leave comments on the first 2 posts... But you have two others to choose from!

Now to add edit and delete comment functions!

Posts Now Have Links

Posted by Luke on 09/16/2011

Well, I just mostly finished the feature I was working on in order to start working on comments (although it's still extremely messy). From now on, you will be able to click the subject (Posts Now Have Links), and go to a page exclusively with this post (or whatever post you clicked the subject of)!

This doesn't work for the previous 2 posts, although I may make the pages myself for them. I need to spruce everything up a bit though, and then I'll start working on comments.

So why did I do this, you ask? Well, now, if I want to link to an article that I wrote, I can provide the direct link, instead of linking to http://www.lukedude5.com/blog, and saying "Scroll down until you find this post". Also, you will have to visit the page exclusive to the post to be able to read all the comments, so as not to clutter the main blog page.

Layout

Posted by Luke on 09/15/2011

I have started working on the layout. I think I'll actually get comments working, then finish the layout, so you can leave feedback. This seems like kind of a short blog post :D

First Blog Post!

Posted by Luke on 09/15/2011

Hello World! This is my first blog post on my new blog that I just finished... kind of. As you can see, the white background is very vibrant :D. I will be sprucing up the layout, and adding new features constantly!

Comments coming soon? Probably!

Anyways, I am going to start posting here a lot. Whenever I find something interesting, or want to say something, I'll just leave a post! Have a nice day.
